When subject matter to even more heat and stress, shales change to slates- which happen to be largely composed of pretty wonderful-grained illite and muscovite (+biotite and chlorite)- micaceous minerals fashioned from the original clay minerals.  With even further warmth and tension, these minerals adjust to coarser micas, quartz and feldspars
